Smokey Robinson Responds to $50 Million Sexual Assault Lawsuit

Motown legend Smokey Robinson is facing serious allegations from four former employees who claim he sexually assaulted them over the course of several years. The lawsuit, filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court on Tuesday, seeks at least $50 million in damages and has prompted a strong public denial from Robinson’s legal team.

The women, identified in court documents as Jane Does 1 through 4, allege that Robinson assaulted them multiple times while they worked as housekeepers in his home in Chatsworth, a neighborhood in northwest Los Angeles. According to the lawsuit, the assaults spanned from as early as 2012 to as recently as 2020. One woman claims she was assaulted at least 23 times over a six-year period, while another says she endured similar abuse more than 20 times during her 12 years of employment.

The claims include disturbing details, such as Robinson allegedly performing a “ritual” in which he would exit his bathroom naked or nearly naked before placing a towel on the bed. Two other women described similar experiences, including repeated incidents of inappropriate behavior and unwanted advances. One woman says she was assaulted seven times during a 13-month period.
The lawsuit also accuses Robinson’s wife, Frances Robinson, of contributing to a toxic and hostile work environment. She is alleged to have yelled at the staff and used derogatory language, particularly targeting the plaintiffs, who are all Hispanic women and were reportedly earning below minimum wage.

In a statement released late Wednesday, Robinson’s attorney Christopher Frost called the allegations completely false. “This lawsuit is simply an ugly method of trying to extract money from an 85-year-old American icon,” Frost said. He described the women’s press conference as “bizarre theatrics” and part of a media spectacle meant to influence public opinion.

Frost also said that Robinson will speak out personally when the time is right and that the legal team plans to fight the allegations vigorously. “We will have more to say as we fiercely defend our clients against these false accusations and work to protect their good names,” he said, adding that they intend to have the lawsuit dismissed.
Robinson, now 85, is one of the founding voices of Motown Records. As the lead singer of the Miracles, a solo artist, and a former Motown executive, he has been a fixture in American music for decades. He was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1987.
