Passion Over Pay: Astronauts Stuck in Space for 9 Months Get No Overtime Pay
THE BUZZ!
NASA astronauts delayed in space for 9 months won’t get overtime pay
Imagine signing up for a one-week job and ending up working for nine months—with no extra pay. That’s exactly what happened to NASA astronauts Suni Williams and Butch Wilmore, who spent an unexpected 286 extra days in space due to Boeing Starliner’s thruster failures.
And what did they get for all that extra time? No overtime, no hazard pay, no comp time—just their fixed government salary of $100,287–$155,034 a year. Even though they worked seven days a week, NASA only paid them for a standard 40-hour workweek. Their only bonus? A small daily stipend of $4–$5 for incidentals, adding up to a mere $1,144–$1,430 for their entire extended stay.
Talk about a job you really have to love! Some folks won’t work a minute past their shift without extra pay. These astronauts put in nearly a year of unexpected work—for barely any extra cash.
