Oscar Awards Historic Moment!
Paul Tazewell, a name you might not know until now, has just made Oscar history. He became the first Black man to win Best Costume Design for his work on Wicked.
Paul Tazewell, originally from Akron, Ohio, has been a force in design for years, with a career spanning from Broadway hits like Hamilton to blockbuster films like The Color Purple and West Side Story. His stunning designs have earned him a Tony Award, and now he can add an Oscar to the award shelf.
In his emotional speech, he shouted out the stars of Wicked, saying, “Cynthia and Ariana, I love you so much…”
Tazewell’s win is groundbreaking, following Ruth Carter’s achievement as the first Black woman to win two Oscars for costume design. The momentum is real, and it’s all about celebrating Black excellence in Hollywood.
And we like that. Congratulations to Paul. That’s wassup.
