MPD is experiencing its lowest staffing levels in 50 years, with fewer than 3,200 sworn officers, according to the DC Police Union. Retirements and resignations have far outpaced recruitment, forcing officers to work nearly 2 million overtime hours last year—four times the average—leading to exhaustion and reduced effectiveness.

This comes as three MPD officers were shot in Northeast DC on Monday. MPD Chief Pamela Smith confirmed they are recovering and acknowledged the staffing challenges but highlighted efforts to leverage technology, including expanded CCTV coverage and the Real-Time Crime Center.

The DC Police Union called for urgent action, emphasizing the risks of an overburdened force and the need for better officer retention and recruitment.
