Starting January 1, 2025, several new laws will take effect in Virginia, impacting wages, workplace protections, and business requirements:
Several New DC Laws Going Into Effect In 2025
- Minimum Wage Increase: Virginia’s minimum wage will rise from $12.00 to $13.50 per hour, continuing the phased plan to reach $15.00 by 2026.
- Ethnic Origin Protections: The Virginia Human Rights Act now prohibits discrimination based on ethnic origin, requiring employers to update policies and training.
- RetirePath Virginia: Businesses with 25+ employees operating for at least two years must participate in this state retirement savings program unless they already offer a plan. Automatic enrollment applies unless employees opt out. Noncompliance may result in penalties.
- Beneficial Ownership Reporting: Under the federal Corporate Transparency Act, businesses must submit ownership details to FinCEN by January 1, 2025, or face penalties.
- Nullification of DOL Rule: A federal court invalidated the Department of Labor’s 2024 salary threshold increases for exempt employees, halting further changes for 2025.
