THE BUZZ!
Dictionary.com has named its word of the year, and it isn’t ‘brat’
Remember that word “demure” that took over TikTok this summer? Well, guess what? It’s officially the hottest word of 2024 according to Dictionary.com!
This word, which basically means reserved and proper, went viral thanks to makeup influencer Jools Lebron. Her hilarious videos used “demure” in a super sarcastic way, satire caught fire, with celebs like Kim Kardashian and J.Lo even joining in on the fun. Suddenly, “demure” wasn’t just about being shy, it was a whole thing. And now she has more than 2.3 million followers on TikTok. Plus a copyright on the phrase very demure.
Well Dictionary.com said that its decision to choose “demure” this year was informed by a deep analysis of social media trends, news headlines and words that transcended conversations online, seeping into everyday dialogue.
That was very demure of them, very mindful.
